Watching films on the internet

Find out how to watch movies on the web.

Whether using a smart TV, laptop, computer or smartphone, digitally literate people have many ways of watching films online. But copyright and licences need to be respected.

Streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+ are a popular way to watch movies at home. Streaming allows users to access content instantly, provided they have a subscription and a stable internet connection. For those who do not want to subscribe, online movie rental services allow you to watch individual films for a fee. Platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies and iTunes all offer this type of service. There are also free digital libraries, such as that of the Austrian Chamber of Labour, which offer a wide range of films, series and documentaries free of charge.

Another option are TV counters. These are online platforms that offer programmes and films for free. ORF, ATV, arte and many other broadcasters offer their content in this way on their websites or in their apps. With foreign TV channels, you will often encounter geo-blocking. It is technically possible to bypass this by using a VPN. However, this may constitute a copyright infringement for which the user is liable.

For streaming services and film rentals, you need to create an account. Find out how to manage this account securely.
